Back to School... Bison Riding now in glorious colour!

Bison or American Buffalo? What is he looking at?
Eek, September is nigh Which means 'Back to School' is imminent, not that you could have failed to have noticed the relentless advertisements and school themed offers that have been everywhere since July. This also means that Summer as we know it is drawing to a close and I thought it time to add a new illustration to my blog,to mark the occasion.
You may remember a sketch I posted some time ago of a Bison with some children riding in a basket on his back, well I've had the chance to paint the piece in colour and here is the finished result- (Warning, you may need to shield your eyes from the yellow...)

Bison Riding by Nicola L Robinson. Maybe the helpful Bison is taking the children back to school....

The sketch of the children in the basket....
The original rough sketch

As you can see my rough work is very close to my finished coloured work. I like to produce fairly tight roughs and get important things nailed down at this stage, so I can concentrate on the colour!

Ice Dragon Illustration. 'What are you looking at, penguins?'

What are you looking at Penguins? Ink on paper
Ah, an Ice Dragon. Watercolour and ink on paper.

Finished Ice Dragon illustration by Nicola L Robinson
A few working process photos of my Ice Dragon illustration. Unusually pale for me, it was nice to work in such a crisp and limited colour palatte for a change after staring at reds and oranges for a long time recently for other projects. Maybe even bordering on festive, haha.

Beaky Monster dominating the space on my desk...

Here's a little crafty interlude... you may have noticed that I've adopted Beaky Monster from my picture book The Monster Machine as my mascot, and online face, here's a little blog post about how I made him using needle felting over on the Monster Machine Blog... now back to the illustration....

The Wind on the Moon - Eric Linklater. Cover Illustration for Vintage Books

I love Vintage Books, I've always been a huge admirer of their cover designs and distinct book spines! so I was thrilled when earlier this year I had the pleasure of working with them on a cover illustration for their Vintage Children's Classics edition of the childrens novel - The Wind on the Moon by Eric Linklater. It was originally published by Macmillan during World War II in 1944 and won the Carnegie Medal too.

I must confess it was not a book I was familiar with, but on reading it in preparation for my illustrations I couldn't help but be taken in by the sheer craziness of the story, following two little girls Dinah and Dorindah and their madcap adventures meeting a host of colourful characters including Mr Corvo, the golden puma, the silver falcon, (pictured on front cover) and Bendigo the bear, Lady Lil and Sir Bobadil (back cover) to name but a few.

The book is illustrated throughout with the original black and white illustrations by Nicolas Bentley.

I received my copy of the book this week and have taken a few shaky photo's...

Front Cover - The Wind on the Moon
Back Cover - The Wind on the Moon
Inside vignette - Bendigo the bear!
The spine - a pair of Kangaroos!

Rapunzel, Rapunzel, let down your hair.... eeeek! Pen and ink illustration

Rapunzel, Rapunzel let down your hair... eek! © 2013 Nicola L Robinson All rights reserved
Another day another fairytale. Drawn during the recent heatwave as my watercolours were not behaving as they should. Bad watercolours! Pen and ink is nice though, just a crisp black spidery line. haha.

My little twist on the well loved fairytale 'Rapunzel'. Those beasties from Sleeping Beauty are at it again, interfering with things. The witch looks delighted though.
